It’s almost been a whole cycle of the sun with Improv in Harrogate! Our very first class was held on May 7th, 2024. Around this time last year, I was wrapping my head around how to launch a new Improv program in a town that barely knew what it was. I wondered how I’d draw people in and, more importantly, how I could get them to fall in love with an art form that has been close to my heart for as long as I can remember.
When we started, there were just four people in that first class, three of whom had never tried Improv before. Fast forward one year, and those same people have just performed in their very first Improv show. The pride and admiration I feel for them are endless. As the seasons passed, I was overjoyed to see the community grow. People wanted more—more ways to explore Improv. We ventured into the park, experimented at a local theater, and eventually, some of our participants became excited to try long-form Improv. I am incredibly grateful for this community and the success of our first performance. We had a full audience who came in curious about Improv and left saying things like, “That was just incredible.” I've temporarily moved away to focus on growth and learning, but I’ll be back in June. In the meantime, I’m starting this little blog to share what I learn as I continue exploring all things Improv. Please stay in touch and share your own discoveries with us while we’re apart—I’m with you in spirit!
